Treyarch has ambitious plans for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2's storyline. In a new interview, studio head Mark Lamia said that the shooter's campaign will actually be affected by player decisions.
Lamia told GameFront that they won't just stop the action and give you an "A or B" choice. Instead, you'll have to make a snap decision. These choices can have either immediate or long term effects on the story.
"It’s important to note that we’re making a shooter and not an RPG but the fact that there are branching storylines and that there’s depth and complexity in the narrative is something that we wanted to introduce so that it wasn’t just a linear narrative for Black Ops II."
Previous Call of Duty games were strictly linear experiences. Playing their campaigns was basically like sitting down for a movie or hopping into a rollercoaster. Infinity Ward and Treyarch have gotten a lot of mileage out of this linear form but Call of Duty is overdue for some experimentation. Hopefully Treyarch is willing to be take chances with other aspects of the game as well.
Black Ops 2's main storyline takes place in the near future. An enemy of the United States has commandeered the country's massive drone army and turned it against them. Players will also flashback to conflicts in the Cold War that have connections to the future war.
