Activision has released the first Call of Duty: Ghosts screenshots this afternoon. They depict scenes also shown in the first in-game footage released today.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is set in the modern-day. It's not a direct continuation of the Modern Warfare series, however. It features an all-new storyline penned by Stephen Gaghan, best known for his work on the films Traffic and Syriana.

Ghosts is a break from the past in a technical sense as well. It's powered a brand-new engine. You can see some of the graphical improvements in the gameplay trailer.

Activision said earlier today during the Xbox One event that Ghosts will be more open-ended than previous games. It sounds like it will be building on COD: Black Ops 2, which provided more sandbox-like environments at times. Players will be able to approach objectives in more than one way. You can't really get a sense of that in these screenshots, though.

Ghosts will hit the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS4, PS3 and PC on November 5th.
