Subscribe To DOOM Review: A Brutally Conflicting Experience Updates
Growing up, I spent years playing DOOM and Quake with my family. Quake was a family ritual where we’d all sit on our computers in separate rooms and battle it out against each other. But what happened when I played the New DOOM multiplayer wasn’t that familiar and nostalgic pure joy. It was more boredom. But needless to say, the campaign was the shining centerpiece of the whole game. 

My experience with DOOM was a very conflicting journey, one filled with a number of opposing emotions both good and bad. The day I received my copy, I quickly picked up a game of multiplayer just to dip my toe in and see what it was like before fulling committing myself to the game. What I was expecting was something along the lines of Quake, brutal gameplay combined with that rich and nostalgic guns-blazing multiplayer experience. Only what I got was slightly different. 

I found the multiplayer to be almost boring compared to Quake multiplayer matches I had played in the past. I couldn’t find a gun I really liked out of the small selection available, so I was forced to use what I had. I missed being able to pick up weapons in the environment, which is also how Quake is too. That way, each match could go completely different with a range of weapons available in one match. So being stuck with the same crappy weapons ruined my experience from the start. 

I’m not sure if it was just me, but the multiplayer matches felt empty and quiet. There wasn’t a whole lot of action happening. There wasn’t any of that DOOM chaos I loved so much. DOOM kept the staggering and chaotic movement from the older games, but the multiplayer gameplay as a whole left me bored and unmotivated to continue on. 

While I did not enjoy the multiplayer, the campaign was a whole different story. There was the DOOM gameplay I was looking for. I walked into each map with guns blazing, blasting enemies left and right and taking them out with their own undead arms. It was totally opposite of my multiplayer experience and I loved every second of it. 

The DOOM single-player campaign was a thunderously satisfying reminder of its predecessors tugging at my nostalgia with the overly ridiculous gameplay, but the multiplayer campaign just didn’t do it for me. It lacked that special something that makes games like this really shine in its multiplayer, and it really sucks. But at least the entire game wasn’t a loss. So if you’re a fan of the ridiculous style of the DOOM games of the past, you’ll more than likely enjoy the single-player campaign.
