There's a new glitch that has a lot of Destiny players trying to cash in fast and hard on a new item that the exotic items dealer Xur has been selling called the Three of Coins. It's an item that opens the doorway to earning very rare weapons and armor that were added with The Taken King expansion.
Kotaku did a detailed rundown of the exploit. Basically players can purchase the Three of Coins item from Xur in exchange for their strange coins. The item can stack.
So what does the Three of Coins item do? Well, it makes it where if you defeat a boss there's a higher chance that they will drop an exotic engram. The engram can be used to exchange or uncover exotic weapons or armor.
If you don't already see where this is going, I'll give you the step-by-step as to how players in Destiny are using it to exploit a low-level glitch.
Basically high-level players are stocking up on the Three of Coins item and then heading back to the very first boss in the game, doing the “Scourge of Winter” mission on Venus. Redditor KinetiClutch did a step by step guide on how to use the Three of Coins to unlock new exotic engrams that were introduced with The Taken King.
Reddit user Parkwaydrive23 explains it very quickly and concisely, writing...
I've been farming Scourge of Winter story boss. Get the checkpoint outside his chamber. Pop coin, snipe boss low, run in and rocket suicide to kill him. If he dropped loot, it'll still be there. Rinse and repeat. Within 15 coins, I've gotten 3 chest exotics.
There's a video showing how players pop the coins, defeat the boss and commit suicide to get the exotic engrams. Check it out below.
So what's the point of all of this? Well, if you haven't figured it out by now, basically players are using this Destiny exploit to get the latest weapons and armor that were added to the game with The Taken King expansion. The thing is, they don't have to do any of the new (and very hard) missions or raids to get the gear.
Bungie's community manager David “Deej” Dague was actually notified about the exploit and relayed the information back to the design team at Bungie. He responded in a Reddit thread stating...
I was just conferring with the Design Team about how Three of Coins is performing in the wild. It is their assessment, and yours as well, given the context of the dialogue here, that the drop rates are too damn high. For now, this will play in your favor...
It's not surprising that someone found a way to exploit getting the new exotics in Destiny without actually playing through the game properly. However, spending strange coins to get the exotics still requires a lot of time and effort on the player's part and purchasing the Three of Coins item doesn't always guarantee that using the exploit mentioned above will grant you an exotic engram. So while it's definitely faster than doing the actual missions in The Taken King, it's not a bulletproof method for getting exotics.
