Blizzard Entertainment's Overwatch has been trending practically all week long leading up to the release of the game on May 24th. One of the ways they've been keeping the game in the media spotlight is with some high-quality short films, and the final film before the game's launch has been released.
Gamespot picked up the Overwatch trailer, which starts with a young girl being tasked with going out and picking up some flour for her mother. On her way to the store she comes across three gang members beating up a robot. She tries to slink past them but ends up being caught by the three members who goad her into beating up on the robot who is laying helpless on the ground.
The young girl decides to forfeit partaking in the acts of violence and is rewarded for her pacifism with the gangs taking her purse and running off. The girl gives chase to the thugs by cutting through some alleys, but before she can confront them, she witnesses them being pummeled to the ground by none other than Soldier 76. After a brief shootout the aging soldier is confronted with finishing off the gang members or protecting the young girl after a stray grenade rolls near her feet; Soldier 76 does the right thing and saves the girl.
She returns home to her mother to tell her about the exploits of Solider 76 while the old war hero stands atop a roof to ensure that she makes it home safely.
The short is definitely a lot less game oriented than the previous three Overwatch shorts, which really highlighted the rivalries between the villains and the heroes. This short was more cinematic than the others, insofar that the story wasn't really about Soldier 76, he was a bit player in a short coming of age tale. The only thing about his past that we learn of is from a poster on a wall that shows when he used to be part of the Overwatch command, back when Reaper and Sombra were his teammates.
And speaking of Sombra... while there were a lot of hints and speculation about her showing up in this latest Overwatch short film, she didn't make her long awaited appearance. However, don't be surprised if she gets her announcement on the day of the game's release or at some point shortly thereafter. A more likely scenario is that she and the other unannounced character will make their debut at BlizzCon later this year.
As for the short film... it may be the final one before Overwatch launches but it's not the last we'll see of the characters in animated shorts. It's likely we'll get another set of short films next season (whenever that may start) featuring more of the characters. I'm sure a lot of people would love to see more of Bastion, Torbjorn and Symmetra, just to name a few.
Overwatch launches tomorrow for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
