The final Pokemon for the current generation is set to launch next year, with Volcanion introducing a new ability type in an upcoming movie, as well as the current generation of Pokemon games for the Nintendo 3DS.
The world of Pokemon is certainly a big and mysterious place. I say that because this dude Volcanion is a massive, four-legged brute of a creature that, until now, has apparently never been discovered.
Volcanion is officially the 721st Pokemon to pop up in the ever-popular monster-catching series of games, and it's apparently playing a key role in the next Pokemon movie set to launch in Japan on July 16, 2016. According to Crunchyroll, the 19th film in the series is currently titled Pokemon X,Y and Z. The key art for the film can be found below, showing off Volcanion in all of his glory.
A legendary Pokemon, what makes Volcanion so unique is that he actually supports a unique blend of abilities. The first Pokemon to be able to wield both fire and water ability types, Volcanion is the first ever “Steam” type Pokemon to crawl out of the tall grass.
But the most important question on any Pokemon fans mind is likely, “How the heck do I get to catch him?”
The Pokemon Company has announced that Volcanion will be made available through all current generations of Pokemon, including both X/Y, as well as Omega Ruby/Alpha Saphire. The method of distribution, as well as the timing, have not been confirmed yet, though it’s likely the big guy will be made available by connecting your 3DS the wifi at either a McDonalds or GameStop. That’s been the traditional means of distribution for the other recent legendary launches, including the Hoopa Pokemon that you can still get at Mickey D’s through the end of the year.
In case you’re wondering what Volcanion looks like in action, here’s a brief gander at this Steam-powered beast unleashing a couple of his big abilities.
Since The Pokemon Company has made it clear that Volcanion is the final new Pokemon being released for this current generation of games, we’ve got to assume that means a new Pokemon game has to be on the horizon. With the new movie launching next summer, a new game in the fall would make a heck of a lot of sense.
