Well folks, this is it... you did it. Heart Machine's Hyper Light Drifter is officially coming to the Wii U after surpassing its stretch goal of $500,000 with just under a day to go in crowd funding on Kickstarter.
The game came storming onto the scene when it was first announced on Steam's Greenlight. It looked like such a unique title with its throwback to classic Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past style exploration and adventuring, but it was fused with a sort of neo 8-bit visual aesthetic and a futuristic wasteland atmosphere. The game came onto the scene acting as if it were a nostalgic video game waiting to put itself amongst the greats within the annals of video game history.
This game was providing gamers a collage of memorable moments we've yet to experience, but we knew they would be provided given the look, the design and the aim that came with Hyper Light Drifter. Even more than that, fans wanted – no, they needed this game on the Wii U as a sign of greater things to come for Nintendo's console that could. The little machine that needed to be. Gamers recognized that the Wii U is a king on a throne without a crown, and the fans are leveraging their passion to help Nintendo rule the kingdom of home console entertainment once again, by supporting games that will put and keep the Wii U in the minds of all who will take an opportunity to scour the potential library of the Big N's next-gen console.
Nintendo Everything confirmed that Hyper Light Drifter is coming to the Wii U, but they note that the specifics haven't been ironed out just yet. There's still a gauntlet of the unknown that gamers will have to wait through as Heart Machine makes the great journey through the design and registration process to become a developer Nintendo is willing to accept under their wing.
With an estimated $3,000 registration fee to become a developer, and dev kits capable of being leased out for minimal or no costs, it's looking rather good for Heart Machine and their Hyper Light Drifter.
However, it should be noted that gamers will have to put on the cap that reads “Patient Waiter” because there's a good deal of patience to be had while waiting for the Drifter to drift your way. The game isn't scheduled to make an appearance no sooner than June, 2014. So you'll need to keep your entertainment palate filled with the tastes of some other form of interactivity until the release day arrives... but with the PS4 and Xbox One around the corner along with the Steam Machines, that shouldn't be too hard.
Anyway, the isometric-RPG adventure game has nothing but love from the gaming community and Nintendo's Wii U – after plenty of controversy, speculation and unwarranted hate – has managed to find itself a nice following of gamers who now understand what it is Nintendo is aiming to achieve with the Wii U. We get it. With a focus heavy on games that are both unique and fun, we're looking at a potential revival of the Golden Age of gaming thanks to titles like Hyper Light Drifter, Monochroma, Monolith's X and Project CARS means that Wii U owners won't be left wanting throughout 2014.
