The NPD issued its June report for video game retail sales in the US today. The month turned out to be a rough one for the industry, with sales down about 10% across the board.

Total hardware, software, and accessories sales were down to $1.03 billion, compared to $1.15B for last June. Combined sales for PC, console, and handheld games totaled $508.9 million, down from $566.8 million. Hardware sales were $366.6MM (a 9% decline against June 2010's numbers) and accessory sales accounted for $158.9 million (an 11% decline).

As always, the NPD is only reporting on physical purchases from retail. Their calculations don't include mobile game apps, subscriptions, rentals or social network games. Those numbers might make the picture a bit less grim. Still, it wouldn't make a GameStop executive any less depressed.

Slow month or not, someone had to win. Rockstar's L.A. Noire nabbed the top spot for software in its second month in stores. Newcomers Duke Nukem Forever and inFamous 2 rounded out the top three, while Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's resurrection on the 3DS ended up fifth. The full top ten is below.
