EA’s and Big Huge Games’ upcoming action-RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning at first looks like a typical, standard-fare medieval-fantasy title that we’ve seen, played and encountered too many times to count. However, upon further inspection (and a lengthy five minute demo from PAX East), it becomes painfully obvious that Kingdoms of Amalur is no standard-fare RPG grind, although it’s not quite the opposite of the standard-fare RPG grind either.

Regardless, the five minute video is a slightly detailed look at various aspects of the gameplay, including the game’s snazzy crafting system, the extremely satisfying combat and one of the most badass magic systems I’ve ever seen in an RPG. Usually mages in games are some weak, robe-wearing pansies. In Reckoning the mages can definitely hold their own and then some. The attacks and weapons at the disposal of a mage are just straight-up awesome and the game almost plays out closer to God of War than it does Dungeons & Dragons.
