In recent weeks, PS3 and 360 fanboys swarmed review aggregator site Metacritic and submitted a flurry of negative user reviews to the competing console's exclusive games, such as Fable 2 and LittleBigPlanet, in order to drive down their overall scores. Now it seems Metacritic is going to do something about it.

The latest round of user review bombs saw Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2, exclusive shooters for the PS3 and 360 respectively, getting user review averages of 5.3 and 3.5 despite sterling critics' scores for both. MetaCritic editor Marc Doyle told 1UP that they plan on disallowing user reviews on games before they're released. It's kind of baffling they ever permitted this but I guess they didn't expect there were so many vindictive fanboys out there looking to smear games for a console they don't own.

Additionally, MetaCritic is planning on implementing an improved sign-up process so users have to provide more than simply their e-mail address in order to submit reviews. They're also looking into ways to give more visibility to legitimate user reviews and perhaps hide/discard fraudulent ones. No word on when any of these changes will be put into effect but until then, just ignore the user review averages altogether. Most of those assholes haven't even played the game.
