While the Wii U has a light showing in new releases this week, the 3DS is making up for it with a number of new games, as well as a pair of highly anticipated RPGs in the form of Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and Rune Factory 4.

After last week's hefty update on Nintendo's home and portable console fronts, it's hard to be too down about the fact that next to nothing is arriving on the Wii U this week. The only new titles is actually a Virtual Console game, Donkey Kong 3, which I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess only has a very niche audience eagerly waiting to snap it up.

While it's kind of a bummer that the Wii U release schedule is obscenely short this week, at least the home console is getting a nice sale in the shape of Bit.trip Runner 2. From Oct. 1-7, you'll be able to swipe the bright, colorful and musical runner for just $14.99. It's one of the best games in the genre, so for fans who haven't picked it up just yet, maybe that 33 percent discount will finally push you off of the fence.

And that'll about do it for the Wii U. See? Not much happening, right? But never fear, a hefty number of 3DS releases are here to save the day, assuming you also own the portable console, too.

First, we'll start with this week's eShop sale, which is set to run from Oct. 1-14. Starting early next week and available for the next 14 days, those of you who missed out on Shin Megami Tensei 4 will be able to pick up the monster catching RPG for $10 off the regular price, marked down to just $39.99. Once again, we're talking about a game that was critically lauded and loved by the fans, so if you've had your eye on it for a few months and weren't quite ready to make a purchase, then now might be the perfect time to do so.

Along with the sale on SMTIV, it's a huge week for RPG fans on the 3DS with both Atlus and Marvelous/XSEED releasing their newest offerings, Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and Rune Factory 4 respectively. Whether you're looking for a classic RPG experience with new school trappings or an evolution of the Harvest Moon series that sees you tending crops while diving into dungeons to battle monsters, this week's games (releasing Oct. 1) should have you covered.

Another five titles will join the role playing dynamic duo on the virtual market this week, including Carps & Dragons, Mystery Murders: The Sleeping Palace and Pets & Claws: Pampered Pets Resort 3D. Let's Ride: Best in Breed 3D will also be available, as well as the ping-pong-tastic Family Table Tennis 3D.

Finally, Astro will be arriving as a DSi title, for those of you who have yet to upgrade to a 3DS just yet. It's also available on the 3DS, of course but, come on, you're going to play that instead of Pet's & Claws? Yeah, I didn't think so.
