Kickstarter is filled with game projects that seem almost too ambitious. The Mandate, a cross between Jagged Alliance and Battlestar Galactica, is one of those projects. I really hope it becomes a real game someday, though.
In The Mandate, players command a starship filled with hundreds of crew members. They can pursue the story-driven campaign or simply explore the universe. The various star systems of the game are procedurally generated to make each playthrough full of unique and unexpected moments.
"With new factions to be found in each sector, and Starbases to be scavenged, looted, and built, watch your empire grow as you conquer and explore the depths of space, where new quests and unexplored territories will reward the most experienced of captains," says developer Perihelion Interactive. "At its core, that’s The Mandate – a fantastical space RPG about betrayal, scavenging, exploration, combat, and honor. These elements are eloquently wrapped in an all-original history and lore, waiting to be discovered."
Like FTL: Faster Than Light, The Mandate's combat will take place inside and outside the ship. You can take the bridge and direct your ship's systems in space battles as you would in Star Trek Online and Klingon Academy. When you're defending the ship from a boarding party or boarding the enemy's vessel, you'll command the troops from an isometric perspective.
By winning battles, you and your officers gain upgrades. The officer upgrades raise the stakes for battles because these crew members can die permanently in combat. If you want to feel even worse about their eventual deaths, you can explore the ship between missions and talk to them.
The Mandate will also support co-op for up to 6 players. Your friend could, for example, command the ship's guns while you lead the boarding party. Perihelion emphasizes that multiplayer is completely optional, though.
"You needn't play with friends, or seldom play with them, it's entirely up to you. There's one thing we need to make very clear, and that is that The Mandate is being created with enough depth and drive to immerse players creative and strategic minds. Many cooperative games distract players from this side, but that's not what we're trying to do. You are your own captain, join your friends, or journey alone - mix, match, whatever you like. It's your sandbox."
Perihelion is hoping to raise $500,000 for the project by December 2nd. You can read more about the project or donate by visiting their Kickstarter project.
