Today 2K Games announced that their military shooter Spec Ops: The Line will be arriving in stores across the world this summer. The game will premiere on June 26th in North America and then spread to other territories on the 29th.

In Spec Ops: The Line, the city of Dubai has been reduced to ruins by sandstorms. Players take on the role of Captain Martin Walker, who heads into the disaster area with a Delta Force team to find a missing U.S. Army colonel. The story is said to be inspired by Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, so expect it to be pretty dark.

The Line will also include a multiplayer component. Details are slim but the 2K mentions in today's announcement that it will feature squad-based combat. There's also an off-hand mention of character classes and a progression system.

If you pre-order The Line at select retailers, you'll be upgraded to the Premium Edition for no additional charge. The Premium Edition will provide you with several bonuses for the multiplayer:
  • Twice the amount of experience points will be awarded during the first week of play, enabling gamers to expedite character ranking.
  • The AK-47 weapon will unlock at rank one.
  • The Officer Class will unlock at rank one. This character class includes several team-based advantages, such as reducing damage to teammates and increasing the effectiveness of other classes.
  • Access to the FUBAR Pack, which contains exclusive accessories allowing players to customize their characters with unique and visually distinctive items.
The Line is being handled by Berlin-based studio Yager Development. This is their first work on the series. They're preparing the game for release on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
