During EA's E3 press conference, we finally got to see gameplay footage from Star Wars Battlefront. The five-minute trailer showed us a multiplayer battle on the icy planet of Hoth.
The multiplayer match is a reenactment of the Battle of Hoth. The Imperials have discovered the Rebel base and they're advancing on it with heavy armor. The mode featured in the trailer is called Walker Assault.
"Fight in epic 40-player battles as a Rebel to destroy the Empire's onslaught of AT-AT's by calling in Y-Wing bombers," reads the official description of the mode on Star Wars Battlefront's website. "Side with the Empire and protect your Walkers while utilizing their mighty weaponry to crush the Rebel objective."
The pre-alpha gameplay, captured on a PS4, starts from a Rebel soldier's perspective. They run through the tunnels of their base and take up defensive positions at the hangar doors. Here they make a stand against advancing stormtroopers. After repulsing the first wave, they notice AT-AT walkers on the horizon along with Imperial reinforcements.
The trailer then swaps over to the Imperial forces. The player, a Stormtrooper, secures an uplink along the surface. The uplinks are key objectives to capture and defend. Apparently they help the Rebels establish air supremacy and call down bomber support on the walkers.
Players aren't limited to infantry roles, though. We see one pilot an AT-AT and rip up Rebel soldiers below with their fore laser cannons. They also call in an orbital strike to wipe out ground forces trying to recapture an uplink. Right after that, we watch a player pilot a Rebel landspeeder. They hit an AT-AT with a harpoon and then fly around the walker several times to wrap up its legs with the attached cable.
There's also some brief footage of players tussling in the skies above in X-Wings and TIE Fighters. While players won't be able to battle in space, they're at least going to get the chance to do some dogfighting above ground battles.
The first cinematic trailer for Star Wars Battlefront promised that players could become Darth Vader. This gameplay trailer gives us a tease of his powers, as he chokes and throws a Rebel soldier with the Force. The trailer closes with Luke Skywalker, another playable hero, attacking him with a lightsaber.
Walker Assault's size will probably make it a very popular mode in Battlefront. However, it's far from the only match type. DICE says that the game will also sport Supremacy, Fighter Squadron, Blast, Drop Zone, Cargo modes. We'll find out more about these different multiplayer experiences in the months leading up to game's launch date.
