January begins tomorrow which, for Xbox 360 fans, means you’re set for a whole new month of Games with Gooooooold. To kick off the new year, Microsoft is dishing out one of the best one-two combos for the service to date with the release of Sleeping Dogs and Lara Croft And the Guardian of Light.
Say what you will about how this month’s Games with Gold offerings are a bit on the older side, the sad fact of the matter is that a lot of people missed out on both Sleeping Dogs and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, a fact that can now be corrected that Gold subscribers are getting both games for free.
Keep in mind that, unlike PlayStation Plus, you get to keep these games even if your Gold subscription runs out. And you’ll certainly want to make some room on the ole’ hard drive for this duo, as both games offer up their own unique blend of fun for the whole family…Okay, maybe the "whole family" doesn't need to see you impale a Chinese gangster on a stack of swordfish heads in Sleeping Dogs, but you get what I’m trying to say here.
Announced via the official Xbox site, Sleeping Dogs is first up to the plate for the January Games with Gold promotion, available for download from Jan. 1-15.
You’ll take on the role of Wei Shin, an undercover cop working the streets of Hong Kong in an effort to take down the Triads, one of the most ruthless crime organizations the city has ever known. You have to play both sides of the law if you want to gain the trust of your new criminal cohorts and occasionally bust a few bad-guy skulls when nobody is paying attention. Sort of a GTA meets Shinmue, you’ll drive around the city, take part in side activities, and beat the stuffing out of enemies using a combat system practically torn straight out of the Arkham series. And I mean that in the best way possible.
Midway through the month, Sleeping Dogs will step aside and make way for Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, available from Jan. 16-31. You’ll play as the titular tomb raider and her new ancient warrior of a pal, Totec, each with their own unique abilities and strengths. You can switch between the two on the fly, but this game was built for cooperative play and, with a buddy at your side, it absolutely sings. You’ll solve puzzles, destroy monsters and work together to plow through a pretty lengthy campaign that will leave you feeling like the smartest duo on the planet each time you figure out one of the craftily constructed obstacles.
In case you couldn't already tell, I’m a big fan of each of these games and, through January, they can both be yours for exactly zero extra dollars through Games with Gold.
