When Sony officially announced a release date for 21 Jump Street 2, they put the film in a very competitive field. Set for June 6, 2014, the movie was going to be squaring off directly against the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, and coming out right near both Pixar's The Good Dinosaur and Universal's Jurassic Park IV. But now that the latter has been delayed, the cop comedy has more breathing room - and it's taking advantage.
Deadline has learned that Sony has taken full advantage of the vacated 2014 weekend and have moved 21 Jump Street 2 to June 13, 2014. This is somewhat bad news, as the move adds another full week of waiting, but good news because the film no longer faces any direct competition. The film will be facing off against How To Train Your Dragon 2 and Think Like A Man Too in its second week of release, but hopefully it will open big enough for that not to matter.
The anticipated sequel will be directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord (the same filmmakers from the first movie) and the first version of the script, written by star Jonah Hill and Michael Bacall, is getting a rewrite from newcomer Oren Uziel. Details about the plot are limited, though it is known that the film will be graduating Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Hill) from high school and having them move on to college. At this time it's unknown who else from the cast of the first movie will be reprising their roles.
