Aquaman Might Consider This Incredible Indie Director

The Sony hacking scandal has unleashed a serious mess. But within that mess, we’ve started to gain some valuable information, especially in the world of comic book movies. The latest leak involves key info on superhero film, Aquaman and it claims that the director has been chosen. An email from within Sony Pictures Entertainment suggests that Warner Bros. and DC have recruited indie director Jeff Nichols to direct Aquaman.

The Daily Beast reports that an email dated October 21 from Michael De Luca, co-president of production for Columbia Pictures to Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment revealed directors for upcoming superhero films including Nichols for Aquaman and plans for Phil Lord and Chris Miller for a The Amazing Spider-Man 3 film.

There hasn’t been much information on the solo Aquaman film to date, but we did already know it was happening. And we know who will star in it. Game of Thrones actor, Jason Momoa was announced back in October as the DC Cinematic Universe Aquaman. There is rumor of his first appearance to be in the upcoming 2016 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and we know the Aquaman solo film is scheduled to release sometime in 2018. Other then that, we haven’t gotten much information on the character, or even what the solo film is going to be about. Aquaman is a beloved member of Justice League, and Jason Momoa has confirmed that he will show up in the Justice League film first, but he had no idea where the character will be taken.

Though we don’t have much clue of a story line, and still need this directing choice to actually be verified by Warner Bros. and DC, it wouldn’t be bad news to throw a director like Jeff Nichols into the mix. The indie director would fit it well among the slew of talented directors that DC already has in hand, including Zack Snyder, David Ayer (Suicide Squad), and Michelle MacLaren (Wonder Woman).

Nichols, most notable for his work on Mud starring Matthew McConaughey, is an incredibly talented writer/director that has a knack for making realistic events feel a bit fantastical at moments, a skill that is sought out in the DCCU. Nichols has also received high praise on his films Shotgun Stories and Take Shelter. He is currently in post-production for his upcoming self-written and directed supernatural sci-fi thriller, Midnight Special, starring Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver, and Kirsten Dunst. The film is scheduled to release on November 25, 2015 and will give us a better idea of how Nichols’ style works with supernatural elements.
