Fifty gets a Two! If you’re a die-hard Battlestar Galactica fan, you might get that reference and you may already be picturing the creased brow of a certain (dreamy) Cylon. Actor Callum Keith Rennie has joined the cast of Fifty Shades of Grey, playing Anastasia Steele’s (other) stepfather, Ray Steele.
Just to clear up any potential confusion, this isn’t a recasting. Ana has two stepfathers. Actor Dylan Neal signed on previously to play the role of Bob, the man still married to Ana’s mother, Carla (played by Jennifer Ehle). Rennie will play Carla’s second husband Ray, whom she married after Ana’s biological father died. Of Ana’s stepfathers, Ray’s the one Anna views as her "real" father, enough so that she took and kept his last name.
Rennie seems like a perfect fit for this role. Ray’s a serious kind of guy who appreciates the importance of self defense enough to teach his daughter a few necessary tips. He also connects Ana to the Jacob of this story, Jose (Victor Rasuk), having served alongside Jose’s father in the Army. Ray’s not a major character in the story, but if the movie follows the book in his case, we might expect to see him at Ana’s college graduation.
As mentioned, Rennie may be best known for his role as Leoben, the Cylon and self-proclaimed prophet in Battlestar Galactica. Other small screen roles include appearances in 24, Harper’s Island, The Firm and most recently, rock ’n roller music producer Lew Ashby in Californication. On the feature side, Rennie’s credits include The Invisible, Memento, The Butterfly Effect and Blade Trinity.
At this point, casting for Fifty Shades of Grey seems to be winding down, but Rennie’s addition adds one more familiar face to the bunch. And we’re still left to wonder who will play the notorious Mrs. Robinson in the adaptation of EL James’ novel. Every time I hear there’s more Fifty Shades of Grey casting news, I wonder if it’s the role of Elena Lincoln, but we still don’t know who will play her. In the books, she’s connected to Christian as the sexy but arguably predatory older woman who seduced Christian when he was just a teenager and taught him everything he knows about BDSM. I don’t remember if we actually see Elena in the first book, though she is referenced and given what a crucial role she plays in Christian’s back-story, it seems like there’s a good chance she’ll show up in the film. But with no casting news on her yet, we can only speculate. Factoring in Rennie’s involvement in the film, I’m now picturing Tricia Helfer in the part. At 39, she might be a bit on the young side but it's not hard to picture her as someone that's seductive and dominating...
Fifty Shades of Grey arrives in theaters February 13, 2015.
