Bradly Cooper was a busy guy in 2015, starring in movies such as Joy and Burnt while reprising two roles on two different TV shows (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp and Limitless), and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down for 2016. The Hangover actors latest project is Deeper, a sci-fi thriller set at the bottom of the sea.
Written by Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra), Deeper is currently in the middle of a bidding war between studios and it’s easy to see why. According to The Wrap, it’s already got A-list talent Bradley Cooper attached to star, with Kornel Mundruczo (White God) set to direct. We don’t have much information on the plot or characters beyond a small synopsis, but it sounds pretty cool!
Deeper follows a disgraced astronaut who turns his sights from exploring above to below. Embarking on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, the astronaut will face physical and psychological dangers from mysterious forces at quite possibly the lowest point on Earth.
Deeper sounds like it was written for me (I have a weird fascination with underwater movies and sea monsters). We’re assuming Bradley Cooper is playing the disgraced astronaut and the film sounds like it could be similar to Gravity... except it's under water, with a supernatural element.
This is the second big budget bidding war for a Max Landis script. The first, Bright, was picked up by Netflix with a full production commitment. Bright has Will Smith and Joel Edgerton attached to star with David Ayer to direct the cop thriller with fantasy elements (think Men in Black but with orcs). The film is a big win for Netflix, who seem to be pushing to develop big-budget original content to stream to their users.
It’s notable that both Deeper and Bright are original properties. It’s hard to find any project in Hollywood that isn’t a reboot, sequel, adaptation or remake of a movie that was already made. Studios are either buying up the rights to every comic book and young adult novel in sight or fast tracking sequels that really no one is asking for (looking at you Die Hard prequel). Maybe that’s why studios are so interested in a Max Landis idea. Say what you want about the writer (he tried to say critics were known for taking bribes in a now-retracted tweet), but at least he comes up with his own ideas.
No release date has been set for Deeper but it can’t get here soon enough. You’ll be able to next see Bradley Cooper in War Dogs with Jonah Hill and in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as the voice of Rocket Raccoon.
