Chris Columbus Doesn't Know Anything About A Gremlins 3

Remember when you heard a few weeks ago that there might be a Gremlins 3 in 3D, and you reflexively curled up in a ball and cried for hours? Chris Columbus, the writer of the original film, was right there with you. Coming Soon caught up with the now-director today, and he said the Internet rumor was news to him too.

"I spoke to Steven Spielberg a couple days ago and said, 'You know, I've been reading on the internet about this 'Gremlins 3D' and no one's approached him either, so I don't know if that's really true."

And Columbus apparently hasn't been spending a lot of time with George Lucas lately, because while he admits he wouldn't mind revisiting Gremlins, he doesn't want it to be in CG.

"I think it's impossible to recreate in a CGI environment. I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm. Those are edgy Muppets in a sense and you don't want to lose that sense of anarchy that those gremlins had, because behind the scenes are 25 puppeteers making them to come to life."

None of this means, of course, that Gremlins 3D won't happen someday. But if it had begun at all, and its makers are serious about connecting it to the original film, I imagine Columbus and Spielberg would have heard about it by now. So you can quit building your Gremlins bomb shelter, but hang on to those emergency VHS copies, just in case.
