Cloverfield Poster Uncovered?

If you need proof that the internet’s obsession over this whole Cloverfield, 01-18-08, or whatever the hell they’re calling it thing has really gotten out of hand, then look no further than CloverfieldNews.com. That’s right, there’s now an entire website dedicated to doing nothing but reporting on a single movie which, let’s face it, nobody really knows anything about. This isn’t like starting TheOneRing.net or BlueTights.net, sites dedicated to covering established, beloved properties on their trek to the screen. This is a website dedicated to reporting on a movie we don’t even really know the title of yet. Sorry, this is crazy and if people thought Snakes on a Plane was overexposed just imagine how sick we’re going to be of… whatever this is… once release day finally rolls around.

Unfortunately, even though I’d like to take a stand right here and ditch Cloverfield talk altogether, I’m mostly all talk and no cahones. My principles will last only about as long as that opening paragraph, because what I’m getting to here is more Cloverfield non-news. The latest vapor-story is that a poster from the movie may be making the rounds on the net, courtesy of the aforementioned CloverfieldNews. They claim the picture to your right is a camera phone snapshot of what may be the first official poster for the film. Note how blurry it is… appropriate since trying to get a solid line on this movie is really a lot like trying to prove the existence of Bigfoot. I’m sure the next still we see from the film will be a pic of Greg Grunberg running past the camera in a really fake looking JJ Abrams suit.

What’s really interesting, and you may not be able to make it out, is that at the top of the poster it says “Monstrous” and at the bottom it says “01-18-08”. Which begs the question is Monstrous actually the movie’s title or is it some sort of tagline? Monstrous sounds kind of lame, but then so does Cloverfield or using your release date as the movie’s name. Frankly, it’d be kind of a step up. CloverfieldNews is also reporting that Paramount Pictures has registered the domain name themonstrousmovie.com, so it’s not entirely unlikely that Monstrous could indeed be the film’s real name.

The image on the poster is obviously, a picture of a headless Statue of Liberty, as alluded to in the trailer by the landmark’s airborne head. As with everything about the movie, the poster tells us absolutely nothing and keeps us guessing. We’re still half a year away from it, but already no matter what this movie is there’s no way it can be anything but an utter disappointment. The hype is out of control and only getting worse.
