Hugo Weaving Confirmed As Captain America's Nemesis Red Skull
Hugo Weaving has landed yet another iconic bad guy role. Rumored a few weeks ago, Marvel made it official today confirming that Weaving will play The Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger opposite Chris Evans as Captain America.
Red Skull is kind of like Captain America’s Lex Luthor or his Joker. He’s Cap’s nemesis, his supervillain. A hideously disfigured Nazi, The Red Skull faces off against America’s top hero during World War Two. Captain America: The First Avenger will focus on the hero’s early years during the fight to take down Hitler, which means you can expect to see The Red Skull wearing a lot of swastikas. Marvel’s press release says “The character will be updated for the feature adaptation,” which could mean just about anything. It seems unlikely, though, that Weaving will escape spending a lot of time in red prosthetics.
Though ever now and then Weaving puts on a pair of pointy ears and helps the good guys, he’s best known for playing unusually creepy villains. He’ll always be best remembered as Agent Smith as The Matrix but he’s also the voice of the villainous Megatron in the Transformers series. The Red Skull could prove equally memorable.
