Hugo Weaving In Talks To Play Captain America's Red Skull

In all of the chaos that has surrounded the casting of Captain America for Joe Johnston's First Avenger: Captain America, it has been kind of easy to forget that there are other characters in the film (after all, the hero's name is in the title). But where you have a superhero, you need a supervillain, which for Cap has always been the Red Skull, the former Nazi general officer who has been doing battle with Cap since the character's introduction in 1941. The casting process for the Red Skull has been all but silent since we learned he would be the villain in February. Until now, that is.

THR reports that Mr. Smith himself, Hugo Weaving, is currently in talks for the role as the evil German combatant. Weaving most recently played Inspector Abberline in Johnston's The Wolfman, which was released last month to not-so-great results. The news source says that the results of the negotiations should come out in the next few days.

One doesn't have to look any further than The Matrix films to know that Weaving has the skills to play a more-than-formidable opponent. I can't vouch for the actor's ability to put on a German accent, but frankly, anything has to be better than this:
