Keanu Reeves' Man Of Tai Chi Trailer Looks Like Fight Club Meets The Matrix

“Why did you win?”

“Because I’m better.”

Initially, I was intrigued by Man of Tai Chi because it marked Keanu Reeves’ directorial debut, and I’m usually interested when a longtime actor chooses a project to direct. I like to know what it is about the material that interested them enough to want to tell this particular story, and I like to see how much they have absorbed working on other sets.

So while the new international trailer for Reeves’ debut (shared by Universal Pictures International) calls to mind the actor’s famous Matrixtrilogy, there’s more than enough to appreciate in the teaser to help me realize that Tai Chi would be high on my anticipated list even if Reeves wasn’t involved. The star plays a deep-voiced manipulator running an underground fight ring who believes that he has found a true contender in Tiger (Tiger Hu Chen). The warrior is recruited into a crooked ring that tests his mettle, as well as his pure will to fight for the right reasons.

The look of Man of Tai Chi is impressive, Reeves giving scenes a futuristic hint while also suggesting danger and darkness. The star/director barking “Finish him!” reeks a little of video-game sensationalism, but if we get a chance to see Neo dust off his wire-fu Matrix moves, I’ll be one of the first ones in lines when the movie opens later this year. As we reported, Radius-TWC picked up the rights to the film while in Cannes. Now they just need to figure out a distribution strategy, so audiences can start seeing Reeves work in action.
