Mr. Popper's Penguins Trailer Debuts With A Vanilla Ice Dance Number

There’s a moment in the new trailer I’m about to show you for Mr. Popper’s Penguins, in which my feelings towards it nearly took a turn for the worse. It’s towards the end, right as Jim Carrey and his CGI penguin friends are about to start a dance number, and as the music starts up there’s that moment when what’s about to play could either be Queen’s “Under Pressure” or Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby”. “Under Pressure” is almost without question my favorite song of all time. Had they used it in this movie, I’d have thrown my speakers out the open window adjacent to my desk. But of course they go the obvious route with “Ice, Ice Baby”, this is a penguin movie after all, so I’m happy to report that this trailer is mostly harmless. I mean, at least it’s not The Smurfs.
Here’s the first ever teaser trailer Mr. Popper’s Penguins in which Jim Carrey plays Mr. Popper and lives with penguins. Grab a coat and watch it in HD on Fandango or embedded below:
Hanging out with a bunch of animals in his apartment is how Jim Carrey really kick-started his career, as the animal obsessive Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. That worked once, maybe it’ll work again?
Somehow, I don’t think there will be a place in this movie for Jim to talk with his butt. This is the lovable, family friend Jim Carrey who does forgettable comedies you can see with your Mom. On that vibe, this trailer delivers. Penguins seem to like it:
