Harmony Korine has already brought together a large number of young actors to work on his next film, Spring Breakers, his feature film follow-up to 2009's Trash Humpers. Though the project lost Emma Roberts earlier this month, the movie is still set to star James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, and Heather Morris. If you're keeping count, that's one actress from High School Musical, one actress from Wizards of Waverly Place, and one actress from Glee. So why wouldn't Korine want to add a touch of Pretty Little Liars?
Deadline has learned that Ashley Benson, who is best known for starring on the CW program, has signed on to take Emma Roberts' place in Spring Breakers. The movie is about four college girls who decide to stick up a fast food joint when they realize that they don't have enough money to go on spring break. They are arrested for the stunt, and meet a "drug and arms dealer" (played by James Franco) who convinces the four of them to kill his #1 enemy. The project is Korine's fifth feature film after the aforementioned Trash Humpers, Mister Lonely, Julien Donkey-Boy, and, his most famous film, Gummo.
Anyone who is familiar with Harmony Korine's work should already know how weird this whole project is turning out to be, but for those that aren't familiar: it's pretty damn weird. Korine has always been known for being experimental and existing outside of the norm, so the tween-loved actresses that he has brought on board for Spring Breakers is a total separation from what we are used to seeing. At the very least it should be a trip.
