Rave Reviews For Superman Returns

If you’re eager to hate Singer’s upcoming Superman Returns, you may be in trouble. The early reviews are in, and I can’t remember the last time any big blockbuster movie had this much early, fiercly positive buzz. Maybe not since Fellowship of the Ring.

I’ve been looking for negative reviews, just to balance this piece out, but it’s almost impossible to find them. The movie isn’t just getting positive early reviews, it’s getting absolute raves from nearly every corner. It doesn’t matter what the medium or level of respectability, critics love Superman Returns. Variety is lavishing it with praise, AICN is giving it their usual fanboy joygasm, and the Boston Herald calls Singer’s Superman resurrection “poetry”.

It’s looking pretty good. Hollywood Elsewhere’s Jeffrey Wells says the movie contains “the greatest sensory thrill I’ve ever experienced from a mainstream movie in my life.” The Superman Homepage says “It’s still inside me, honestly. It touched me. It’s brilliant.” Ok the Superman Homepage guys are starting to make me feel uncomfortable, but with 41 reviews in the movie has a stunning 94% rating on the review congregator RottenTomatoes.

Where’s the negativity? There’s always one sourpuss, and it’s David Poland. Poland is the only legitimate source stomping on the incredibly positive Superman Returns vibe. He claims “audiences will find themselves talking about Little Man instead of Super Man by the middle of July.” Sorry David, that seems unlikely.

Since we’re not situated on either the east or the west coast, Cinema Blend will be in the second batch of critics allowed to see the film this Friday. Let’s hope it’s as good as the early word indicates. Check back with us Friday night for confirmation.
