Role Models Director David Wain Eyeing Time Travel Comedy

Hot Tub Time Machine didn't really set the box office on fire (read lots more about that here), but the old time travel or body switching story never gets old in Hollywood. The next one in line might even be coming from Role Models director David Wain, who has kept pretty quiet since that movie became a surprise hit in 2008 but, according to Pajiba, is now eyeing an adaptation of the graphic novel Too Cool To Be Forgotten.

In the novel by Alex Robinson, a middle-aged man undergoes hypnosis in an attempt to quit smoking but winds up back in 1985 and in high school, forced once again to relive all the humiliation and chase the girl of his dreams. Casting can be tricky for these movies-- you can try to pretend Matthew Perry once looked like Zac Efron in 17 Again, have everyone else see John Cusack as his younger self as in Hot Tub Time Machine, or age actors up or down as in Back to the Future-- but Wain has practically a dozen actors who seemingly jump every time he gives them a call. Would you want to see Michael Showalter, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black or even Paul Rudd stuffed into ugly 80s high school clothes? Or should Wain come up with some newcomer who fits right in with his style?

Casting conundrums aside, it's just great to hear that Wain has another project in mind, particularly since Role Models was such a clever surprise after the clunky and bizarre The Ten. Who knows if he's got another Wet Hot American Summer in him, but the more Wain the better as far as I see it.
