The future of Warner Bros. as a movie studio is a much-discussed topic these days, thanks to Paramount’s hindered-but-looming takeover, but we’re here to focus on movies, and not corporate overlords. (A thinning line, I know.) It’s not like WB has much to worry about with tentpole features, with James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, the Minecraft Movie sequel, and new Oceans and LOTR movies hitting theaters in 2027. But what about a couple of in-development projects that haven’t been updated on in a while: The Matrix 5 and The Jetsons live-action movie?
Amazingly enough, the studio itself confirmed that both the fifth live-action Matrix feature, and Jim Carrey’s rumored Jetsons feature are on the way, even if they won’t be showing up as 2026 movie releases. In a letter to its shareholders, Warner Bros. hyped up its past year of efforts, with lots of promising talk about the future, and that’s where the pair of drastically different science-fiction projects were namechecked. As it was stated:
Beyond 2027, the slate will continue to leverage iconic intellectual property, including the theatrical event film Aegon’s Conquest from the Game of Thrones universe, the next installment of The Matrix, the next Batman film, and a live-action Jetsons film starring Jim Carrey.
To play devil's advocate, this wouldn't be the first time a studio has promised a project that never reached the production phase (or that got shelved indefinitely after its production). But this doesn't feel so much like a false promise, given the way both films are casually mentioned rather than given a spotlight.
Plus, they're named alongside two of the more highly anticipated WB projects that are in the works. One is of course Matt Reeves' return to Gotham City for The Batman: Part II, which was somewhat recently delayed from October 2027 to 2028, and which has yet to fully confirm who its villain(s) will be. Then there's the Game of Thrones movie from Andor's Beau Willimon that'll be titled Aegon's Conquest. To be fair, that project has yet to announce a director, but that seems like the only thing holding it back.

- The first Matrix movie that won't have direct involvement from Lana and Lilly Wachowski, though Lana was previously revealed to be an executive producer.
- Cabin in the Woods, The Martian and Project Hail Mary screenwriter Drew Goddard is writing the script, and he will also make it his third directorial feature.
- Goddard approached Warner Bros. with his original idea for where to take the story, though that story has not been teased at all.
Reactions to the news about a new Matrix movie were mixed, with some fans saying the franchise didn't need to continue after Resurrections, while others were angry that the Wachowskis wouldn't be a creative force behind the scenes. I think Goddard is capable enough of steering this franchise in a new direction without all the prior lore weighing it down, so I'm glad that Warner Bros. is making sure to keep it in shareholders' minds.
The Jetsons Quick Facts
- In October 2025, Jim Carrey was reported to be making The Jetsons his first live-action movie since 2016 to be outside of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
- Set to direct the live-action Jetsons movie was Colin Trevorrow, who was also said to be co-writing the screenplay with Joe Epstein.
Neither Trevorrow nor Epstein were namechecked in the shareholders report, but then neither was Drew Goddard, so I suppose we can't base any suspicions on a lack of reference.
