Spacey Goes Super

Aaaaaaargh!

Just days after the announcement that Kate Bosworth would play Lois Lane in Warner Brothers’ upcoming attempt at rekindling the Superman franchise comes the next big casting announcement - who will play the Man of Steel’s nemesis?

It appears Lex Luthor will be played by none other than Kevin Spacey, as rumors have been predicting for quite some time now. The news was confirmed by Variety last night.

This reunites Spacey with Kate Bosworth, who played Spacey’s love interest in Beyond the Sea, which was CinemaBlend head honcho Josh Tyler’s least favorite movie of 2004. It also reunites the actor with director Bryan Singer, who directed Spacey in The Usual Suspects. No word has been given about whether there will be a grand reunion ball for all the people Spacey has worked with as the prodigal son returns home.

With Beyond the Sea being one of the least liked films of 2004, and the cast moving to this project alongside a relatively unknown actor donning Supes red tights, it makes this reporter wonder whether WB is trying to revitalize the Superman franchise, or bury it. After all, as bad as Superman IV: The Quest For Peace was, it was no Batman and Robin. Maybe WB is trying to see how much they can stretch the boundaries of badness with Superman like they did with Batman.

No word on whether Ned Beatty would be available to reprise his role as Otis, Luthor’s inept but lovable underling.
