One of the most fun outings a movie music geek can appreciate is the opportunity to see a film screened with live accompaniment. Seeing one of your favorite movies with a live orchestra just brings a special, extra dimension of enjoyment to something you already love to bits. The crowds of New York Comic Con experienced this first hand, as Howard Shore conducted a full orchestra at Radio City Music Hall for three years in a row, as he conducted performances for each of the The Lord Of The Rings trilogy's films. This year, San Diego Comic Con audiences will have a chance to experience that magic, as Variety has announced that a six city tour with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek films is heading to the con on July 26th.
Certain venues will show 2009's Star Trek, with others showing 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, all with live backing by local orchestras. The tour will start in Europe on May 24th, making its way to various stops in the US, and ending in Canada next March. Live music events like this are always exciting, and manage to pull in a decent crowd because of their novelty. They're even bigger smashes when they're scheduled near Convention time, where the show is as entertaining as the people dressed in Starfleet uniforms to see it.
If you really need convincing that this is an awesome night out, feel free to listen to one the tracks below. "Enterprising Young Men" from Star Trek. This tune is pretty much the official theme for the reboots, so it does crop up in both films. Full of bombast and percussion, it's a hell of a thing to hear cranked all the way up.
For those of you who are bigger fans of Star Trek Into Darkness, there's the track "London Calling." A more low key piece, for the most part, it is still a piece worth hearing live due to its beautiful piano and expressive strings.
The Comic-Con performance is scheduled for Embarcadero Marina Park South on July 26th, and will feature Star Trek. Tickets can be purchased here for that performance, but if you want to purchase seats for one of the other stops on the tour, you can consult Star Trek's official event page here.
