Weekend Box Office

Much to the chagrin of Douglas Adams geeks the nation'round, Hitchhiker's Guide made a sad showing on it's opening weekend. I suppose it's to be expected. In fact it was. I predicted on the CinemaBlend forums that it would make around $21 million. Come on and be realistic about it. The only people really attracted to this film are the fans. The rest of America just went to see it because xXx looked about appealling as a James Bond movie starring Scott Baio.

I was actually expecting xXx to take top honors this weekend. I guess all those rap fans and violence obsessed teenagers decided to stay home with their far more entertaining xXx video game. Why watch Ice Cube run around doing a bunch of over the top stunts when you can do it at home on your XBox.

Anyway, a sad turn out at the movies in general this week. Maybe gas prices are too high to get people out to the theaters? Maybe it's everyone staying home to program their TiVo for the upcomgin sweeps. Either way, as the movie says, don't panic. Any day now we'll start seeing releases opening with spectacular takes in the hundreds of millions. Too bad it will all be going to Lucas.
