There are certain blockbusters that we can expect to see at the same time yearly. Disney will be releasing a new Star Wars flick every December, and the Fifty Shades franchise is methodically releasing films every Valentine's Day or so. Case in point: Fifty Shades Darker, the sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey. The sequel promises to be just as sexy as the original, while also expanding the universe as a whole. And a new trailer was just released, which teases all of the thrills and chills to expect this coming February. Check it out.
Pretty intriguing stuff, right? Overall, Fifty Shades Darker feels much bigger in scale than its predecessor, probably because it doesn't have to waste time with origin stories and set up. We know the main characters, and now we can get a better view into their world- especially the mysterious Christian.
But what the above trailer failed to do was give almost any of the story away. Perhaps this was intentional, as the movie business has a pretty bad habit of ruining movies with trailer that show nearly all of the movie's main plot points and twists. But the sequel's plot is far more interesting than the original, so this may have been an error on their part.
Fifty Shades Darker, as well as the novel it is based on, once again focus on the tumultuous relationship between Anastasia and Christian. The final moments of Fifty Shades of Grey saw Ana leave Christian presumably for good, after his BDSM lifestyle becomes too abusive. But just a few weeks later, the pair once again meet and reconnect. Fifty Shades Darker shows a much more powerful and independent Anastasia, as she has obtained a new job and will no longer be submissive to Christian.
But Christian reveals himself to be much more sensitive than we originally believed, and is willing to have a traditional vanilla relationship with Anastasia. The two will presumably still have tons of steamy love scenes in Fifty Shades Darker, but this time it will be far less dungeon-ey than we saw in the original.
Christian's past will also be one of the main focuses in the sequel. Two major characters from his history are making appearances, and will presumably have some serious animosity toward Ana. First, we saw Kim Basinger's Elena Lincoln. Lincoln is a badass cougar who introduced Christian to the submissive/dominant lifestyle when he was just a teenager. When she finds out that Anastasia is Christian's girlfriend, rather than his submissive, she gets real pissed.
Additionally, there's also the crazypants newcomer Leila. She's the one who is standing around Anastasia's bed like she's a character from Paranormal Activity. She was a former submissive of Christian's, and it looks like she's a tad unhinged.
Fifty Shades Darker will hit theaters February 10th, 2017. Be sure to keep it here at CinemaBlend for updates on the franchise.
