Keanu Reeves has kept himself busy in Hollywood ever since The Matrix trilogy concluded, but it's safe to say that John Wick has become his most popular character after Neo. Released in late 2014, John Wick was a surprise action success, paying tribute to many genres, but also standing firmly on its own by establishing a unique world and offering viewers impressive visuals and sequences. Later this week, John Wick: Chapter 2 will continue the adventures of the eponymous assassin, and judging by early reviews, Lionsgate has another hit on their hands, but does that mean John Wick: Chapter 3 will become a reality? That remains to be seen, but Reeves is definitely game for returning.
During an interview with EW, Keanu Reeves made it clear that he's eager to play John Wick for a third installment, but whether that's made or not depends on the success of this the sequel. In his words:
Absolutely. I love the character and the world. Whether or not I get the chance to do another chapter is really up to the audience. If they enjoy what we did --- and hopefully they do, fingers-crossed, I really dig it --- but if they do enjoy it, then I'll have the chance to continue the story of the character and the world.
Made with a $20 million budget, John Wick earned $86 million worldwide. Not astounding, but also solid for a brand-new action tale with no ties to existing intellectual property. It's practically guaranteed that John Wick: Chapter 2 will make more than that amount, and judging by early reviews, it's doing well for itself among critics. So from a critical and commercial standpoint, ideally there's nothing for us or Keanu Reeves to worry about.
Even better, it sounds like Lionsgate is already interested in giving John Wick a third adventure. Three months ago, director Chad Stahelski revealed that the studio had tasked him with coming up with ideas for John Wick: Chapter 3, and he said at the time that Ian McShane's Winston and Lance Reddick's Charon, the Continental Hotel's main representatives, would have bigger roles. While we can't say with 100% certainty that John Wick: Chapter 3 will be green-lit, the likelihood of that happening is strong. Besides, even if by some bizarre chance Lionsgate doesn't order a third John Wick movie, fans won't be without the skilled assassin entirely, as Dynamite Entertainment will publish a John Wick comic book series later this year.
Taking place a few days after its 2014 predecessor, John Wick: Chapter 2 will follow the eponymous protagonist as he's forced out of retirement and must travel to Rome to fulfill a blood oath. The movie will be released in theaters this Friday, and stay tuned to CinemaBlend for updates on what is happening with John Wick: Chapter 3.
