What Wonder Woman 2 Should Be About, According To Patty Jenkins

Wonder Woman in the trenches

The DC Extended Universe is a tricky place. Because although all three movies in the universe were rather divisive, fans still clammer to each new film announcement (and there are many). DC fans are also hopeful that Patty Jenkins' upcoming Wonder Woman will be the first critical success of the shared universe when it hits theaters in June. An origin story set in WWI, we'll see Diana's superpowers and skills in battle tested against machines as she is introduced to man's world. But what could a sequel be about? Petty Jenkins has some ideas.

Ahead of Wonder Woman's release to the masses, Patty Jenkins spoke to the Toronto Sun about the first female superhero movie in the DCEU (or MCU). Regarding a possible sequel, Jenkins revealed where she'd like to take both the character and the tone.

I'm excited for her to come to America and become the Wonder Woman we are all familiar with from having grown up around her as an American superhero. I'd like to bring her a little farther along into the future and have a fun, exciting storyline that is its own thing. Wonder Woman 1 is so much about her becoming the person she is. I can't wait to spring forward with who she is and have another great standalone superhero film.

Now this is exciting. Rather than another film set in Diana's early years on Earth, it looks like a possible Wonder Woman 2 movie would be set back in the modern timeline.

This seems like the perfect choice to expand Wonder Woman's character in the DCEU. Because while an origin story is definitely necessary to establish Diana's colorful past, the more matured Wonder Woma we met in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was a total badass. A seasoned and somewhat jaded warrior, we saw as she independently investigated some of the shady business happening around the DCEU. And when she stepped into the battle again Doomsday, she came with the coolest theme song and some serious skills.

Patty Jenkins seems to want to make Wonder Woman 2 a more fun storyline, likely because of Diana's sense of humor in the modern timeline. Her banter with Bruce Wayne has been a highlight of the Justice League trailers, and hopefully this levity and razor sharp wit will be present during each of her DCEU adventures moving forward.

Of course, it's possible that Patty Jenkins' time jump may not actually mean it'll catch up with where the DCEU is currently living. Diana has lived a long time, so another standalone film could take place in between Wonder Woman and Batman v Superman. We'll just have to wait and see.

Wonder Woman will hit theaters on June 2nd, 2017. Check out our full 2017 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
