The first new Star Wars movie gave us a whole cast of new characters to inhabit the galaxy far, far, away. The sequel will mostly follow those same heroes and villains, though there are three brand new characters in Star Wars: The Last Jedi who will be important to the story. Two are played by well-known actors Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro, while the third comes from relative newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.
As with most details surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there's a lot we don't know about these three characters. However, we've collected everything that we do know about these newcomers to the story, and how they will fit into the newest chapter of the Star Wars saga. Here's the rundown on Rose, Amilyn Holdo, and DJ.
Rose may be the most intriguing new character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, if only because, from the outside, she appears so simple. Rose is a maintenance worker for the Resistance; she's a mechanic. It's the most simple and boring occupation for a Star Wars character since moisture farmer. She also has a sister named Paige who is a pilot, who might seem like the more interesting character. But it's clearly Rose who will factor into the show's narrative. We've seen from the trailers and behind the scenes footage that Rose will be right alongside Finn when he attempts to infiltrate the First Order disguised as an officer. Is Rose more than we're being led to believe, or somebody who gets in way over her head? It's not exactly clear at this point. We do know that Rose is director Rian Johnson's favorite new character, and that probably means a great deal.
Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo
Laura Dern plays the part of Vice Admiral Amilyn Holda. The character recently made an appearance in the Star Wars novel Leia, Princess of Alderaan as a member of the Apprentice Legislature where she befriended a young Princess Leia. Decades later, Holda will be a Vice Admiral in the Resistance and the commander of cruiser Ninka. From everything, we've learned it appears that Holda will be sharing a number of scenes with both General Leia and Poe Dameron. It is also likely Holdo's ship that we see that pair on in the trailers. While every indication is that Holdo will be an ally, we have heard that her relationship with Poe Dameron may not be on the best terms. Holdo will take some sort of leadership role in the Resistance during The Last Jedi, apparently due to General Leia sustaining an injury.
No new character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is as mysterious as the one being played by Benicio del Toro. The character is known as DJ, though it's not entirely clear if that's his actual name. What we do know is that the character is a slicer, which is essentially a computer hacker. Finn and Rose will come to DJ with data they need decrypted, likely from their infiltration of the First Order mentioned earlier. This will take them to the casino planet Canto Bight. It sounds like DJ is all about finding the best angle for himself, which means he won't be the most trustworthy character. The fact that DJ is being hidden like this certainly implies there's more to him that we're meant to be surprised by. We'll find out when Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuts December 15. If you want to be the first to learn about these new characters, be sure to pre-order your tickets soon.
