Disney's Wreck-It Ralph was a surprisingly fun and heartfelt look at the world of video games from the inside. The sequel is going to expand on that idea by taking Ralph to another digital world, the internet itself. While we haven't known exactly what that will mean for Ralph or his sidekick Vanellope Von Schweetz, the first still image from Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, beyond the initial teaser, gives us our first look at the digital domain, and the sort of characters that make it up. Check it out.
The image is bright and colorful and has the feel of Tron if it were given a healthy dose of Prozac. There's a distinct "digital" feel to the world, but in a much brighter and happier way than Disney's other world inside a computer. We also get our first look at any other characters beyond our main pair. They consist of a couple different types. The majority have massive square heads and tiny bodies. Based on the fact that one of them has a speech bubble above her head containing nothing but an ellipsis, these could be characters in some sort of chat program or avatars another communication platform. Beyond that we have candy-colored characters holding up what appear to be banner ads, the two we can see reference what appears to be some sort of weight loss program and an online dating service.
The rest of the aspects of the image are fairly general. We see several different icons were familiar with in using computers, as well as a random floating cat head because this is the internet, so of course, there are cats.
With just the one image, it's impossible to tell if the entire internet will look like this or if this is just one area of several. We also don't know how important these characters will be, but they appear to be so abundant that it's a safe bet that Ralph and Vanellope will be interacting with some of them. If our characters are in this place, there must be a reason, and we can expect somebody in this corner of the internet will be important for their quest. Perhaps this is where they'll meet the character voiced by Ana Ortiz.
We don't know a great deal about new characters in the film. One major new character, named Yesss was introduced in footage a last year's D23 Expo but she hasn't been released publicly. We also know from that D23 footage that one of the places Ralph and Vanellope will visit will be Disney's own Oh My Disney website, where they'll meet all the Disney princesses.
We've got most of a year to wait before Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 arrives in theaters, but we can bet there will be a lot more of the internet to see before the film debuts in November.
