Weekend Box Office: Meatballs Up For A Second Helping

Last weekend things were looking rather grim for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and its $100 million budget. But this weekend audiences decided to give the food storm a second chance and a hefty box office boost.

The animated adventure held the number one spot for a second weekend with $24 million, dropping less than 20% from last weekend’s total (most movies drop 40%-50% on their second week out). At $60 million and counting it may become a profit earner yet.

Bruce Willis’ latest wanderings into the sci-fi realms had a rough first weekend. Surrogates took in only $15 million for a distant second place. I blame the bad hair. There was even less interest in the film revival of Fame. The original movie banked over $21 million total during its 1980 run. At this rate it looks like its successor may not do much better, even without rubbing in the fact that ticket prices were one third what they are today.

Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster fared even worse. At sixth place with $4.4 million Pandorum suffered from the usual general lack of interest reserved for lame-looking horror movies. In the past director Paul W. S. Anderson, who was behind the Resident Evil movies has enjoyed the benefit of having video game fans to keep his movie ticket sales up. Pandorum marks the first wide release by Anderson that didn’t open above $10 million.
