Three of the worst movies of the summer were foisted onto movie-going audiences this weekend and, in good turn, all three made only tiny splashes at the box office.
None of the newcomers could top last week's number one film, The Help. The summer underdog has slowly been building in popularity over the last few weeks and is set to cross the $100 million threshold this week. Adding an additional $14 million this weekend, it has managed to become a financial success in the midst of the end-of-summer doldrums.
Eclectic action flick Colombiana rolled in at number two with just $10 million. With only an additional $6 million from international ticket sales to date, it's in for a hard run to earn back its estimated $40 million budget.
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark debuted at a close third place with $8 million while R-rated comedy Our Idiot Brother settled in at fifth with only $6 million. While it's an unimpressive total, the movie, shot on a shoestring budget of $5 million, is already a financial winner for Weinstein.
