Side Effects is a movie by Steven Soderbergh, so you can pretty much guarantee it's not going to look like you're average off-the-rack thriller. But it's also a twisty and sometimes even scary thriller, the kind of thing that you really can sell to any audience, even if it requires masking some of the weird quirks that make it distinctly Soderbergh's.
You can see exactly how they do it in this exclusive new TV spot, which we're premiering below. With the deep-voice narrator asking you "How do you solve a murder when everyone has something to hide?" it's straight out of the thriller trailer playbook… but you can definitely get the sense that there's something more beneath the surface.
The movie, which will be the last Soderbergh releases in theaters if he keeps up with his plans to retire, reunites him with the likes of Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Channing Tatum, and also brings in Rooney Mara, who puts in yet another fantastic performance as a woman prescribed a drug that might be harming her a whole lot more than it's helping. The movie contains a lot of twists that I wouldn't be crazy enough to spoil here, but it's definitely a lot more complicated than a typical anti-pharmaceutical screed-- and also gives Jude Law a chance to put in yet another great performance that argues strongly for a comeback.
Side Effects comes to theaters on February 8.
