Will The Avengers Make More Money Than The Dark Knight Rises?

Just days after being released, The Avengers has become the fastest movie ever to earn one hundred million dollars, the fastest movie ever to earn one hundred and fifty million dollars and the fastest movie to ever earn two hundred million dollars. It also now boasts the highest grossing Saturday and Sunday in the history of the American motion picture industry. To call it a hit would be an understatement. It is quickly turning into a phenomenon, and with word of mouth almost exclusively positive, the film seems guaranteed to continue setting records. Whether it will wind up being the highest grossing movie of the year however is another question entirely.

Six months ago, if you had asked most people whether The Avengers would make more money than The Dark Knight Rises, you likely would have heard many say no. After all, 2008’s The Dark Knight raked in more than one billion dollars and is widely considered one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. The buzz surrounding the conclusion to the trilogy has been obvious and palpable for five years now. It seemed like the sure bet to win 2012. Now, the possibility is looking far more dicey.

The Dark Knight Rises is scheduled to be released on July 20th. Unlike The Avengers, it will only run in 2D, which will mean per ticket earnings will be a few dollars less at every site. Considering no reviewers have seen the film yet, it’s still unknown whether the movie will actually be any good. I have a lot of confidence in Christopher Nolan. The director has earned my good will, but I’m still not sure The Dark Knight Rises will be able to top The Avengers in box office grosses. What do you think?
