Among the many new characters that Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced last month was Poe Dameron, cocky X-Wing pilot and Finn’s best bud. If there’s one word to perfectly describe him, it’s “hotshot.” Oscar Isaac will reprise Poe for Star Wars: Episode VIII, but if you’ve been perusing around social media, you know many fans are dying to see more of him. Well, not to worry, as later this year, Poe will star in his own Marvel comic series later this year.
The House of Ideas announced today that their new ongoing series Star Wars: Poe Dameron, written by Charles Soule and illustrated Phil Noto, will hit shelves sometime in April. Taking place before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the series will follow Poe’s time as General Leia Organa’s best X-Wing pilot and the “leader of a squadron with an important mission.” In addition to fleshing out Poe’s personality, the book will feature a supporting cast of both legacy characters and other “rookies.” The latter will include Poe’s fan favorite droid BB-8 and other X-Wing pilots, which could mean we get appearances from minor The Force Awakens players like Snap Wesley and Jess Testor. According to USA Today, the series will also introduce Poe’s “chief nemesis” from the First Order. This individual wasn’t identified, but if we had to guess, they’re probably some kind of Red Baron-like pilot.
This is the Marvel’s latest Star Wars series after Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm, following the pre-Attack of the Clones miniseries Star Wars: Obi-Wan & Anakin, and the Star Wars Special: C-3PO one-shot. Fans also learned some of Poe’s backstory last year meeting his parents in the miniseries Star Wars: Shattered Empire. While Soule said there won’t be many flashbacks in the series, he hopes that readers will get a better idea of his persona through how he approaches certain situations, and his relationships with his allies and the Force.
Star Wars fans met Poe at the beginning of Star Wars: The Force Awakens when he was retrieving part of a map leading to Luke Skywalker’s location from Lor San Tekka on Jakku. Poe was captured by the First Order and interrogated by Kylo Ren, but was able to escape custody thanks to Finn. Poe later led his X-Wing squadron on the assault against the First Order at Maz Kanata’s palace and at Starkiller Base, delivering the the destroying shots on the latter.
We won’t see Poe in live action again until Star Wars: Episode VIII is released on May 26, 2017, but in three months, you can find Star Wars: Poe Dameron #1 at your local comic book store or digitally at locales like Marvel.com or Comixology.
