Mark your calendars, Doctor Who fans. The BBC is planning to reveal the 12th Doctor this weekend. According to Doctor Who executive producer and lead writer Steven Moffat: "The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve."
The 12th Doctor will be revealed this Sunday, August 4, on a special titled (appropriately) : Doctor Who Live: the Next Doctor, hosted by English television and radio personality Zoe Ball. The special will air at 2:00pm ET on BBC AMERICA and BBC One (in the UK). Bell will interview the new Doctor in front of a live studio audience and will be joined by special guests, Doctors old and new, as well as companions and celebrity fans. Moffat and current Doctor Matt Smith will also give interviews.
Smith has played the 11th Doctor since 2010, but announced that he would step down from the role in June. "It's been an honor to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one,'" said Smith at the time of his announcement. "But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls." Smith will appear in the upcoming 50th Anniversary special on Saturday, November 23 and his Eleventh Doctor will regenerate in the Christmas Special.
For obvious reasons, only speculation exists for the identity of the 12th Doctor. Skyfall actor Rory Kinnear was rumored to be up for the role shortly after Smith's announcement while Digital Spy thinks The Thick of It star Peter Capaldi might be up for the part. It's anyone's guess until this Sunday, of course, but I would appreciate the series going in a totally different direction and finding either an older actor (such as Capaldi) or, even change it up even more with an actor like Idris Elba. Obviously, Elba has his own series in Luther and a busy movie career, but I mean an actor like Elba. Chiwetel Ejiofor, perhaps? Jeffrey Wright? Ian McKellen? Just spitballin' here, folks.
The 12th Doctor will feature in the 8th season of Doctor Who, which will debut sometime in 2014. Jenna-Louise Coleman is set to return as the Doctor's companion Clara Oswald. In the meantime, here's a video interview of Moffat discussing the 12th Doctor at Comic-Con.
