If you’re a fan of IFC’s faux soap opera miniseries The Spoils of Babylon that aired last year, you’re going to want to mark your calendars for the follow up, as the creative team is back with The Spoils Before Dying. A riff on the hard-boiled whodunit murder mysteries of yore, the short run kicks off next month and they’ve delivered a fun new trailer to whet your appetite.

Michael Kenneth Williams fronts the story of Rock Banyon, a jazz musician turned private eye in, you know, jazz times. When he discovers his lady friend (Maya Rudolph), the love of his life, and another man dead, it doesn’t look good for him. See, he was blacked out drunk and has no alibi, but plenty of motive, and will have to clear his name before the cops lock him away in the darkest prison cell they can find and throw away the key. But other than that, The Spoils Before Dying looks like a lot of fun.

Like its predecessor, this upcoming miniseries has put together an impressive cast of comedic talent. In addition to Williams, who you don’t usually think of as funny (though if Omar from The Wire told us to laugh, we would), and Rudolph, you’ve also got Will Ferrell, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Tim Meadows, and Chris Parnell all joining in on the manic shenanigans. There’s also an appearance from Haley Joel Osment, who also showed up in Spoils of Babylon—maybe he’s the through line in all of these send ups of classic melodramas, maybe IFC and company are building a shared universe like everyone else.

”Ferrell”

This looks to be the same style of humor as Babylon, simply juxtaposed to a different genre. Like the previous installment, it is also based on the works of fictional author Eric Jonrosh (Will Ferrell looking awesome), and it appears to follow the same pattern, where each episode features an interview with the scribe discussing his work and hollering about random things, like wine in this trailer. It is also framed as a long-lost film, having been banned and misplaced for years, newly discovered and unearthed for the enjoyment of the general populace.

A three-episode event, The Spoils Before Dying kicks of on Wednesday, July 8, on IFC at 9:00 pm. It promises to be a pretty damn good, if a little bit odd, time. Williams did call the production surreal at one point.
