Grey's Anatomy has been one of the biggest shows on the small screen for well over a decade now, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon. In fact, a brand new spinoff of the series is slated to hit the airwaves later this year. The still-untitled spinoff will be set in a fire station and follow the lives and careers of a group of firefighters, including one who gave up his career in medicine to try something new. ABC has finally released some images of what to expect from the new show, and photos indicate that we'll see some familiar Grey's Anatomy faces early on:
Although the action of the spinoff may be primarily set in a firehouse rather than a hospital, at least some of the beginning of the series will take place at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Ellen Pompeo will appear as Meredith Grey, and she'll clearly share some screentime with spinoff leading lady Jaina Lee Ortiz, who plays firefighter Andy Herrera. Andy herself seems uninjured, but the dangerous nature of her job probably means that something happened to land somebody in need of serious medical attention. We can bet that Meredith won't be the focal point of the spinoff premiere. Still, longtime fans of Grey's Anatomy will undoubtedly be happy to see her on board to help launch the new series.
Another image indicates that Andy Herrera won't be the only firefighter present at Grey Sloan Memorial in the big premiere.
This next photo gives a look at one of the other new characters who will appear in the spinoff. Danielle Savre will play competitive Olympian-turned-firefighter Maya, and here she looks just about ready to run into (or out of) a fire. That said, she doesn't show any signs of having rushed right out of an inferno into Grey Sloan, so she may not have been present for whatever crisis may have sent the firefighters to the hospital.
Jason George is also present in this photo as Ben Warren. As the Grey's Anatomy character who will be moving over to the spinoff full-time, we should get to see plenty of him in the new show. He's already wearing his firefighter duds in this pic, which could indicate that he hits the ground running once he switches from medicine to firefighting. It should be interesting to see if Ben crosses paths with Bailey during this visit to the hospital. Details are still a bit fuzzy on how exactly their relationship will or will not be resolved by the time, but we can bet that their interactions will be tense.
Any tension between Ben and Bailey apparently won't stop Ben from enjoying his new job, if this photo is anything to go by. That is not the smile of a man who regrets his choice to leave medicine to chase a new career, although the odds are that he'll face plenty of problems that won't give him anything to smile about in the long run. He's not exactly leaving medicine for a less intense job. Still, it should be fun to see how he fares starting out as a firefighter compared to how we've seen him for so many years on Grey's Anatomy.
You can catch the two-hour series premiere of the Grey's Anatomy spinoff (which will hopefully receive a name sooner rather than later) on Thursday, March 22 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
