What goes on in a therapist’s head? Who knows, but this new HBO series gives a little peek into that complicated world. Adapted from a popular Israeli series, the show follows psychoanalyst Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) through his week, capturing a session each night with his patients – Laura (Melissa George), Alex (Blair Underwood), Sophie (Mia Wasikowska) and married couple Jake and Amy (Josh Charles and Embeth Davidtz) – before concluding each Friday in the office of Paul’s own therapist, Gina (Dianne Wiest).

In Treatment takes an intense look inside the head of one man who counsels others for a living. And he takes his job very seriously.

One of the many wonderful things about The Sopranos was the intense sessions between mobster Tony and his therapist, Dr. Melfi. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if this show stemmed from those particular scenes, not that I’ve been listening through the office doors at HBO’s inner sanctum or anything.

I’ll definitely be checking out this show, not only because of the interesting subject matter, but also because of the astounding cast. Well, that and listening to other peoples’ problems makes me feel so much better about my own life.

I only wish it was on for an hour instead of a half-hour. What’s up with that anyway? You’re just getting into shows like Entourage, and bam, they’re over. Maybe someone from HBO will listen in here and think twice about the half-hour thing.

Also, Mark Wahlberg is an executive producer, and I have great respect for his work over the past few years. And here’s something interesting: Gabriel Byrne wrote an autobiography several years ago titled “Pictures in My Head.” I wonder if he knew this show was in his future.
