The Crown is a royal drama filled to the brim with the intrigue that surrounds the Windsors. There is no one character more eventful than Queen Elizabeth II’s younger sister, Princess Margaret. Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter took over the role of the free-spirited princess from Vanessa Kirby in Season 3. As she reveals in an exclusive clip from The Crown: The Complete Third Season Blu-ray and DVD, playing Princess Margaret is a “gift.”

Thankfully, you do not have to wait that long to check out Helena Bonham Carter’s probing thoughts on Princess Margaret. In the exclusive clip above, the actress opens up about the real-life character and how much of a gift she is to play.
It sounds like Princess Margaret was a role that Helena Bonham Carter took great joy in portraying. As Carter points out, she was a complicated woman. Princess Margaret lived a colorful life before she died in February 2002 at the age of 71. Carter acknowledged feeling anxiety over her playing the part, which she researched to help it keep from overwhelming her.
While fans will soon get to relive Season 3 on DVD and Blu-ray, they can also look forward to Helena Bonham Carter’s final bow as Princess Margaret. The Crown will return for its much-anticipated fourth season later this month. Carter will be joined by Season 4 newcomers Gillian Anderson as the other Margaret – Margaret Thatcher – and Emma Corrin as another largely looming Princess -- Diana.
Interestingly, both Gillian Anderson and Emma Corrin cited Princess Margaret as someone on The Crown they would have liked to play. Corrin also noted that there were strong similarities between Princess Margaret and Diana. As Helena Bonham Carter points out in the exclusive clip above, Princess Margaret always had a lot going on.
Helena Bonham Carter still has another season to go as Princess Margaret, so I would expect further reflections. When The Crown returns for Season 5, Phantom Thread’s Lesley Manville will take over the role. Season 4 will be Carter’s curtain call. As Carter leaves, more new cast members will soon be arriving on the Netflix drama. For now, you can relish what happened last season.

Helena Bonham Carter will be back as Princess Margaret for the final time in The Crown’s fourth season. It premieres on Sunday, November 15, on Netflix as one of this fall’s premieres.
