It’s hard to believe that after seasons and years spent with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, Breaking Bad is very close to ending its five season-run on AMC. The network has split Season 5 into two sections, airing the first set of eight episodes last summer with the second set of episodes set to air in the summer of 2013. Now, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced Breaking Bad: The Fifth Season will hit Blu-ray and DVD on June 4th.
If that seems a little wishy-washy and confusing, it is. The episodes that will be available on June 4 actually only involve the first eight episodes of Season 5, or the first half of the season. However, since there’s no Volume 1 or other notation, don't go grabbing a copy off the shelf assuming you'll be getting some episodes early. Sony may have two reasons for marking the first half of Season 5 this way. The first is that eventually a Complete Season 5 set will be available and The Fifth Season is just a bonus for early birds. The second is that the second half of the season will come out later and will be marked as Season 5. 5--which is the more likely option. Either way, it’s not a choice I would have made, but now that you are educated on what’s what, you can make a purchasing decision on your own.
Honestly, the best news about the June 4 release is that it means the second half of Season 5 Breaking Bad will likely drop later that month. AMC hasn’t officially announced a premiere date for the series and this is the closest we’ve come so far. So, keep your eyes peeled over the next couple of days and see if official word hails from the network concerning a premiere date.
While there should be plenty of extras with both Blu-ray and DVD copies of The Fifth Season set, the big bonus feature is a scene called “Chicks ‘N’ Guns” that was created exclusively for the Blu-ray set and helps to explain just how much the relationship between the show’s two main men, Jesse and Walt, has changed over the years. While the scene was shot and produced for this Blu-ray release, it will follow a moment missing from episode 508, otherwise known as “Gliding Over All.” You can check out the complete list of extras, below.
