How do you document real life when real life’s getting more like fiction each day? To all of you out there who have a special place in your heart for Jonathan Larson’s hugely successful Broadway musical RENT, you’ll surely be happy to know that a taped version of the Broadway production is going to be offered through Pay-Per-View and Video on Demand starting this Saturday!

I saw Rent five times when it was on Broadway. Yeah, a little overkill, I know but I also know there are plenty of RENT-heads out there who’ve seen it many more times than that so I guess it’s all relative. Plus they used to do this lottery thing at the Nederlander for front row tickets and I kind of got addicted to that for a little while. Anyway… For those of you who never had the chance to see the musical performed live on stage, and for those of us who could never get enough of it, iN DEMAND Networks and Sony Pictures Television worked out an agreement to get a taped production of one of the final performances of the Broadway musical up on Pay-Per-View and Video On Demand in the United States.

RENT: Filmed Live on Broadway will premiere on Pay-Per-View this Saturday, February 7th at 8:00 PM and will be available through February 17th, after which it will be available on Video on Demand (beginning February 18th). According to a statement released by in Demand, “Filmed in New York’s Nederlander Theatre shortly before the play closed last September and featuring footage from the show’s final Broadway performance, this telecast captures the electricity and colorful authenticity of the original stage production that played to sold out houses.”

If you’re unfamiliar with RENT, the musical follows a year in the life of a bunch of young adults living in New York City, dealing with struggles including AIDS, drug addition, relationship issues and the trials that come with trying to figure out who you are and where you belong. Even if you’ve seen the movie, the stage production is not to be missed. I’m definitely interested in seeing how it looks on TV.
