We’ve been waiting 23 long years to see Bruce Campbell return to the role of the deadite-stomping Ash Williams, though it feels like even more, especially after we found out that the upcoming Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead was a reality. And now we finally have our first official look at Ash and his chainsaw hand, as well as his new cohorts. Check out the bloody good image below, and try not to bother anyone too much with your cheerful hollering.
Thanks to EW, we now know that Campbell looks as good as he ever did with blood covering his face. (As if there was any doubt in anyone’s mind.) It’s hard to contain the excitement that seeing a chainsaw-hand stimulates, as this just isn’t something you see that often in fiction, and especially not on television.
Okay, so I guess it’s not really all about Campbell in this shot, although that’s what fans undoubtedly care about the most. We also have our first look at the co-stars in Ray Santiago’s Pablo and Dana Delorenzo’s Kelly, two Value Stop employees that team up with Ash on his newly-reformed quest to stop evil once a new breed of deadites rise up to take over. I like the fact that, while they don’t exactly look enthused, neither of them are particularly horrified by getting caught up in the gore. You’ve got to be at least 85% badass to keep up with Campbell’s boomstick operator.
While information about the series has mostly come in overall vague descriptions, Campbell and director Sam Raimi shared a few details about what we can expect, including the fact that Ash has being drunkenly lying to people about how he lost his hand. (Who would believe him?) Here’s how the actor relates things, bringing up a certain acting legend.
It’s The Searchers with carnage and mayhem. I’m relegated a little bit into the John Wayne mode these days with my team – the young, virile, evil fighters who will pair up with Ash and take on this nemesis: this never-ending, ever-evolving nemesis.
The thought of Campbell in John Wayne mode is almost as exhilarating as anything else we can expect from this show. Raimi shared that Ash will, in fact, be responsible for bringing the deadites back to the world once more, because “he’s the only one stupid enough to really tamper with those spirits.” Them’s fighting words.
Ash vs Evil Dead – which also stars Mimi Rogers, Lucy Lawless, Jill Marie Jones, and Hemky Madera – will chainsaw its way to Starz at some point later this year for Season 1, presumably around Halloween.
